“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to the public, emphasizing that obstructing officers of the commission from carrying out their lawful duties is a criminal offence.
In a statement released by EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, the agency addressed a recent incident involving a failed attempt to arrest former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, who was allegedly smuggled out of his residence by the current governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo.
Citing Section 38(2)(a)(b) of the EFCC Establishment Act, the agency highlighted the legal ramifications of obstructing its officers, noting that culprits risk imprisonment for not less than five years.
The statement underscored the increasing trend of individuals and groups under investigation attempting to obstruct EFCC operations by resorting to unlawful means, including recruiting thugs.
The EFCC emphasized its commitment to upholding the rule of law and warned against misconstruing its restraint as weakness. The agency affirmed that it would not tolerate any form of obstruction and would mete out appropriate punitive measures to offenders.
