Tragedy Strikes as Nine Bodies Recovered in Niger State Boat Mishap
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has officially reported the recovery of nine bodies following a devastating boat mishap in Shiroro Local Government Area. The incident, which unfolded on Thursday, November 16, claimed the lives of ten individuals, the majority of whom were traders en route from Zongoru Community to Gijiwa. Their mission was to transport goods ahead of the Friday market in Kuta, the administrative hub of Shiroro LGA.
The victims, now identified as Farida Muntari, Sharhabila Sagir, Bubakar Sadiq, Na’ima Ibrahim, Amina, Safaratu Ibrahim, Sadiq Ibrahim, Rafiya Yakubu, along with two unidentified individuals, all hailed from Zangoro. The boat, carrying a total of 34 individuals, encountered tragedy on its journey. Miraculously, 22 passengers were rescued by local divers amidst the chaos.
Salihu Garba, the Head of Relief and Rehabilitation at NSEMA, provided these details in a somber interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. Mr. Garba shared that the agency is actively involved in a search operation to recover the remaining bodies. The affected families and the entire community are grappling with the aftermath of this unfortunate incident.
As Niger State mourns the loss of lives, questions surrounding the circumstances of the mishap persist. Authorities are likely to launch an investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy and whether any preventive measures could have been implemented.
