Nigeria postal service generates N3.01bn in 2022

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a significant decline in the total revenue generated from postal activities in 2022. The revenue dropped from N3.63 billion in 2021 to N3.01 billion in 2022, marking a substantial decrease of approximately 17.05 percent.

Additionally, the NBS released its Postal Service Data for 2022, which revealed a decline of 19.43 percent in the total number of Post Offices and Postal Agencies. In 2021, there were 2,794 of these entities, but by 2022, the number had reduced to 2,251.

These statistics indicate a challenging year for the postal industry, with both revenue and the number of postal offices and agencies experiencing significant declines.

According to the report, there was a slight decline in the total number of boxes installed in 2022, with 836,731 boxes being installed. This represents a marginal decrease of 0.08 percent compared to the 837,428 boxes that were installed in 2021.

Furthermore, the report noted a more substantial decline in the total number of Private Mail Bags (PMBs) available in 2022. There were 20,775 PMBs in 2022, marking an 8.44 percent decrease from the 22,689 PMBs that were recorded in 2021.

These statistics suggest that there have been some changes and challenges within the postal service sector, particularly in the installation of boxes and the availability of Private Mail Bags.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a substantial increase in the total number of postal articles handled in 2022. The figure rose by an impressive 102.05 percent, surging from 17.7 million postal articles recorded in 2021 to a total of 35.7 million in 2022.

The breakdown of these postal articles is as follows:

  • Domestic mail handled: 15,669,072
  • Mail dispatched abroad: 543,893
  • Mail received from abroad and delivered in Nigeria: 19,463,153

These numbers reflect a significant increase in postal activity across the country.

Furthermore, the report highlighted the distribution of installed postal boxes, with Lagos State having the highest number of boxes installed in 2022, totaling 143,416. In contrast, Jigawa recorded the lowest number of installed boxes, with only 1,800.

These statistics provide valuable insights into the postal service sector’s performance and activity levels in different regions of the country.
