The House of Representatives Commences Probe into Alleged Certificate Racketeering
The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into purported certificate racketeering involving certain officials of Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), allegedly collaborating with Nigerian students.
This inquiry comes in the wake of revelations made by Umar Audu, a reporter for DAILY NIGERIAN, who obtained a degree from a university in Cotonou, Benin Republic, within six weeks and subsequently participated in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
Mr. Audu’s accusations implicated unidentified officials from the Ministry of Education in a racketeering syndicate, prompting widespread condemnation from concerned Nigerians.
Abubakar Fulata, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Certificate Racketeering, led the discussion on the motion, urging the House to identify both the officials of MDAs and the students who have benefited from such illicit operations over the past decade.
Fulata emphasized the gravity of certificate racketeering, warning that if left unchecked, it could severely undermine the healthcare system and various sectors of the economy.
The House has mandated its Committees on University Education, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and Youths Development to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and submit their findings.
Fulata stressed the importance of addressing this issue promptly, calling for cooperation from MDAs and relevant stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive resolution to the problem.
