Deadly Clash Claims Lives in Benue State: 45 Feared Dead
A tragic clash between suspected armed Fulani militia and local Tiv bandits in the Gbagir community of Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State, has resulted in the deaths of at least 45 individuals, including members of rival militia groups and innocent farmers.
The conflict erupted following the abduction and subsequent killing of a Fulani militia leader, Alhaji Gana, and his family members by a Tiv militia leader from Ukum LGA. Outraged by the incident, allied Fulani and Tiv militia gangs mobilized to retaliate against the perpetrators, intensifying tensions in the area.
According to reports, armed militants numbering in the hundreds descended upon the Gbagir community, engaging in a bloody confrontation that claimed numerous lives. Tragically, innocent civilians, including a family of seven, were caught in the crossfire, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
The swift intervention of the military, particularly Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), helped prevent further bloodshed, although the situation remains volatile as armed groups continue to occupy neighboring villages, posing a significant threat to the local population.
