The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI 2), Okpravero C. Ufuoma, who was stationed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. This action comes after a video titled “This is how Immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria” went viral, showing Ufuoma allegedly soliciting a bribe from a traveler.
In a statement, Comptroller-General of Immigration Kemi Nandap emphasized that Ufuoma’s behavior does not align with the values and ethical standards of the NIS, especially amid ongoing reforms to improve the service. The statement also highlighted the recent installation of electronic gates (e-gates) at the nation’s international airports, which aim to streamline passenger travel and prevent incidents like the one involving Ufuoma.
Ufuoma’s suspension is indefinite, pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures, and aligns with the law and Public Service Rules. The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out corruption within its ranks in adherence to its Zero-Tolerance for Corruption policy.
